MILLERSBURG PRIMARY and SECONDARY (exterior) PATTERNS

Text by Diane Fry/Photos by Dean Fry

Design and execution of the Millersburg patterns are absolutely without equal. Many of the crystal items made in 1909 were not carried over into the iridescent wares. Throughout 1910 the Millersburg factory continued to add patterns to their iridescent production line in competition with Fenton, Northwood, Dugan and Imperial manufacturers. For a time they were quite successful with their application of “satin” finish iridization. However, in 1911, their financial circumstances became crucial, leading to reorganization. John Fenton still at the helm, with new investors, the plant was placed into operation making the famed “Radium” ware. (Please read Marie’s book for more details!) Determined to recapture its former reputation for iridescent ware, this new venture was successful for a very short time. By May, 1912, the factory was idled forever.

Most will agree that in the short period of production, Millersburg Glass turned out both a large quantity, and a combination of some extreme rarities, along with some pieces of lesser quality iridescence. Wide variations in “quality control” exist. However, a great piece of Millersburg is hard to beat!
In this study, we will concentrate on the larger Millersburg bowls in approx. 9”-11” size; those having distinctive/outstanding exteriors which compliment the interior patterns. While most of those exteriors can be noted through to the surface of each example, surprisingly few collectors are familiar with their names and application!

The Wilson Auction sticker dated 1982, as seen on the Many Stars bowl indicates that piece to have been #359 in their collection offering. That was the FIRST MAJOR carnival glass collection to sell at public auction!........Collectors came from far and wide to attend. Huge prices were realized. Carnival Glass “came into its own” at this point, commanding the limelight of attention in the collecting world, gaining influence , respect and desirability……….BIG TIME!
